Tenasol Medical Record Summarization Tool

Tenasol’s summarization tool (located here) is a tool for summarizing a medical record of any type for review purposes. The tool ingests a single HL7v2, HL7v3, FHIR, and PDF/image files for free.

In this blog we will cover the features of the tool and how to configure it for your use. If you are interested in accessing the API for high volume use, please contact our team.

What Does This Tool Do and Why?

Federal, payer, provider, and pharmaceutical business entities often perform high-volume review tasks in our current healthcare environment. This may be for HEDIS, risk, prior authorization, and disability use cases among others. It is a common feature to offer summaries to review agents for records to give context as to who the record is about before opening it. When constrained to high level information that is 1-3 sentences long, this feature is not easily quantifiable in value but of preferential interest to these review agents who must search the record for critical information.

While summarization tech has been around for decades, lightweight LLM’s have been a paradigm shift in how it is performed, with very low error and larger context windows. This tool performs exactly this feature in a cost-effective way for review augmentation purposes.

The tool accommodates the following (volume and size limited to paying customers):

What Makes This Different From Other LLM’s?

Not all LLM’s are equal. It is important to strike the balance for your use case. This variant is specifically created to be:

  • cost effective and fast

  • permit large input files (>100,000 pages of data)

  • to be HIPAA compliant in a production capacity, as it is hosted privately in a HIPAA compliant environment when accessed with a client account.

Limitations of Free Version:

  • only 1 file may be run at a time

  • the number of files that may be merged is limited to 10/day

  • unstructured fields and input files are not available for processing.

  • you should have a BAA in place with Tenasol to meet full HIPAA compliance.

  • file size - we merge files of any size but limited each file to 0.5mb for the free version.

Is It HIPAA Compliant?

Yes! Tenasol offers fully HIPAA data merging under a paid contract, and we expose it here as a so prospective clients may test out our best-in-class conversion capability with deidentified or synthetic medical record data.

For our free use online tool, we do not retain your data past one hour maximum, and it is encrypted in transfer and at rest, however it is not good practice to upload healthcare data to the internet for trial products.

Does Tenasol Offer This Service as an API?

Yes! Tenasol offers evidence export services as a:

  • HIPAA compliant API

  • HIPAA compliant user interface

  • HIPAA compliant batch transfer service

Which ever one is easiest for your organization we can accommodate. We permit processing volumes for over a million files a day, and can process files of any size.

The Tenasol Medical Summary Utility

Medical record summarization can help review teams get oriented before opening a full record. Tenasol’s tool creates a concise, high-level summary from formats commonly used across healthcare, including HL7v2, C-CDA, FHIR, X12 claims, PDFs, and images. It is designed to support review workflows such as HEDIS, risk adjustment, prior authorization, and disability processing, where a short overview can make it easier to locate relevant details.

The free online version offers a way to explore the workflow with non-sensitive test data, subject to file-size and usage limits. For organizations processing production data, Tenasol offers contracted API, user-interface, and batch-transfer options in a private HIPAA-compliant environment. A Business Associate Agreement is needed for the covered service, so teams should confirm the arrangement and safeguards that apply to their use before sending protected health information.
