Tenasol Healthcare Data Converter

Tenasol's healthcare data transformation tool (located here) is a tool for converting between different healthcare formats, such as HL7v2, HL7v3, FHIR, EDI X12, image, and PDF for free.

How Do I Use The Healthcare Data Conversion Tool?

To use the tool, simply select a conversion mode and upload the associated file. Note that only files with extensions that match the input file format will be available for selection on your browser. If a malformed or invalid file is supplied, our system will throw an error.

Conversions take up to about a minute depending on the input file size. From there, you may view, download, or copy the output. If the output is HL7 FHIR, consider viewing and or validating in our FHIR Viewer interface.

Tenasol is capable of processing PDF and image files, but currently does not offer them in the transfer tool due to underlying OCR costs, however we may offer this in the near future.

Limitations of Free Version:

• the number of files that may be converted from an IP is limited to 10/day

• limited conversions available (PDF/image inputs are excluded)

• you should have a BAA in place with Tenasol to meet full HIPAA compliance.

• file size - we process files of any size but have a limited input size for the free version.

Is It HIPAA Compliant?

Yes! Tenasol offers fully HIPAA compliant versions of this tool under a paid contract, and we expose it here as a so prospective clients may test out our best-in-class conversion capability with deidentified or synthetic medical record data.

For our free use online tool, we do not retain your data past one hour maximum, and it is encrypted in transfer and at rest, however it is not good practice to upload healthcare data to the internet for trial products.

Tenasol is also more broadly is currently undergoing SOC 2 approval for the 2026 year.

Does Tenasol Offer This Service as an API?

Yes! Tenasol offers data transformation services as:

• a HIPAA compliant API (2-step to accommodate OCR processing)

• a HIPAA compliant user interface

• a HIPAA compliant batch transfer service

Which ever one is easiest for your organization we can accommodate. We permit processing volumes for over a million files a day, and can process files of any size.

How Much Does The Full Private Version Cost?

Why Convert a Medical File?

Our larger blog on interoperability covers this in detail, but hospitals often like to move data formats to whatever is convenient for their systems, hospital-to-hospital EMR's or payer transactions sometimes require rendering a PDF, and payers or federal business units may want to aggregate data in a single format - which most often these days is a custom format or the API-focused HL7 FHIR format.

What Options Are There When Converting a Medical Record?

Converting between formats comes with a few options, that Tenasol offers, but are not explicitly available in our free utility. These include:

• Structured only conversion: Many use cases require pure-play 100% precision on transformation. Unstructured data (like data found in PDF's, images, text files, or unstructured sections of structured files) generate findings that may not be 100% accurate.

• Encapsulation: When converting to HL7 v3 or HL7 FHIR, there is the option to include the original file inside as a binary. While this is not true interoperability, it does meet some use cases needs to natively, in a technical sense, store all objects in a FHIR format.

• Tracking/Referencing: Tenasol offers the option to track or reference where a resources data came from in the form of a custom Tenasol extension, that offers:

  • a boolean indicator if the data is structured or not

  • the context (text around the target or path to where it occurred if structured)

  • the coordinates of the data (if unstructured image or pdf)

  • the page where the data came from (if unstructured image or pdf)

  • when using AI/ML solutions, the confidence that the target was detected

• Provenance: Which is used to indicate that Tenasol was the organization that completed the data conversion.

  
  

  

Why Are All Conversion Options Not Available?

Tenasol provides as many options as it reasonably can for transfer - but some like X12->PDF may seem limited in nature as the original message itself only holds so much data. See the above note on PDF or image input formats, as we offer this but you must contact our sales team to use this feature.
